SSBC conversion kit help
« on: October 05, 2010, 06:28:47 PM »
I recently read the following about installing the rear conversion kit. THis is what someone said in 355nation.

"In order to use the SSBC kit you have to also install the front kit too.  If not there is an issue with the ABS and proportioning valve or master  cylinder."

Can anyone confirm or deny this?

well its rare to find anyone that has done this. Have you contacted ssbc? I agree with the prop valve issue because a caliper piston is alot larger than a wheel cylinder piston there might be a pressure issue there. I dont think it will cause a problem with the ABS.
start by getting in touch with someone from SSBC :D

I just got off the phone with SSBC tech support. Heres what they said.

The rear conversion kit (A117-14, cost 1300$CDN) can be installed on the colorado with no issues to report (no issues with lifted trucks either).

The catch is you also need to change teh front brakes if you install this kit, since your rear brakes will now be larger than your front brakes. Now here is the downer the front brakes (A117-12) cost 1650$CDN. For a grand total of 2950$ before tax (or install cost if need be), ouch!

I guess I'll be putting my plans for these brakes on hold for a little while.

yeah I mean there really is no reason other than looks and bragging rights. if you want a good brake upgrade go with slotted/drilled rotors and a set of ceramics for the front and some good brand reybestos or wagner shoes for the rear. paint up your calipers and drums and you have sweet brake upgrade for a fraction of the cost!

Contradicting info.

Well I had another question for SSBC this afternoon, so I called them again only this time they tell me I can keep my front brakes as is and upgrade the back with the conversion kit.

Maybe SSBC is just trying to up sales on the front big brake kit for the 355 or maybe the tech guy I spoke to has no clue and just said anything not to look dumb. Either way, I'm now unsure of how to proceed. Anyone have any input.

BTW Zeuce, I'm starting to really like your idea.

I think it should be an all or nothing approach to this. Complete kit all around or nothing. Cleaning up, paint / powder coat the current brakes and they can look just as nice, just not as big & powerful.

I don't think it'd be worth it either. You'd be better off to search for the improved front disc set-up on the '09 and '10 trucks - they have bigger rotors and I believe a better caliper. The drum brakes in the rear have plenty of stopping power for these trucks, its the little front rotors that are a bit weak.

True story. Minimum wheel size has to be 16" oem wheel * in order to clear the 09+ front brakes.

* Some aftermarket wheels of the same size may not clear brake package either so always test fit first before mounting tires.

Think the h3 rotors are the same as what comes on the '09s and '10s? What would be included in the swap? Spindles, calipers and rotors? Or maybe just the calipers and rotors?

SSBC Conversion is pricey really pricey.

I would do the upgrade. I got to wait till my caliper breaks down won`t be for like another 5-8 years. All you need is rotor, pads and caliper to gain that inch.

Sweet! Since i put on larger tires I've wanted to put better brakes on the front. I wonder if the H3 setup is what they put on the newer trucks? Probably the same thing I imagine. The H3s always had 16'' wheels and pretty big tires... easier to find too!
