Supermod Ported Throttle Body
« on: May 11, 2010, 11:20:47 PM »
I recieved my ported TB today and I was impressed by the look and care in the port work. Install went smoothly with the provided instructions. * anyone installing a TB note that the bolts are only torqued to 89 inch pounds, dont over do it! Once installed the engine fired up and idled smoothly right away.
Here is are pics of the port and polish job:

Here is where it gets interesting. the lip in the next pic really caught me by suprise! I could not believe there was such a lip in the stock casting. It measured about 5/32nds. once I installed the ported TB I noticed that the lip matches up to the inside of the intake manifold. I am going to get the TB off again and see if its possible to elongate the bolt holes to mount the TB up a bit to better mate to the intake opening.

Off the line throttle response has been improved! I just tuned my PCM so the butt dyno cant tell how much but it still is noticably better  ;D  overall its a very wikid mod for anyone tuned or not. I imagine the results would be more drastic on a stock truck but the improved airflow is a benefit to anyone. I would def suggest doing a CAI along with this mod. The best thing you can do to improve the performance of any engine is breath in and breath out, which is what this mod is all about.  8)

Where did you get it ? (Is it the Supermodulation I saw on Nation...)

That is a mod I would defenitly like to do, I already got a CAI (home made).

okay here is an update on my PTB install. I dont know if this problem is only on my rig or not but I found the TB doesn't mate up with the intake properly. it sits too low. this has to be the way they were designed because the lower lip that James removes when porting actually covers up the gasket on the intake opening. WTF!!!!! So hee is what it looks like:

So what I did is filed down a 1/8th of an inch in each of the TB mounting holes to allow me to move the TB up. this was enough to mount the TB flush with no overlap. WOW did the engineer sh!t the bed on that one LOL. You guys can check yours by having a buddy hold the throttle pedal to the floor with the key on engine off. this will hold the throttle plate open so you can see if the TB is mounted off as well :)

I noticed the lip as well when I took mine off to clean it...I'll have to look into it...would you by chance be able to snap a pic of the filed holes Chris? Would be nice to see.

its the same with the factory TB. nothing James did at all. This issue doesnt cause any problems at all. its just sh1tty quality control on GM's part. I dont think you gain any beneifits from moving the TB up. just once I saw it it bothered me. allthough you would think that that lip from being misaligned would interupt airflow?

Post install update: couple of days in, the trucks really pulls better from a dead stop. idle is smooth and no problems have occured. It also seems like my intake is a bit louder. all in all there is a big smile on my face :)

Yeah great mod, I got mine back in July and notice a difference right away. Once I did my CAI it was even better.
